For great reads and profound connections.

In its heyday, Tumblr was an important vector of the feminist movement. It brought women together and gave them a place for sharing ideas and experiences. It opened young women’s eyes to the world of feminism, coaxing them away from frustration and fear, protecting them from being gas lit, showing them that it was never their imagination, that if something felt wrong it is because it was wrong. It discussed sexism in discrimination in a funny, accessible and empowering way.
My education to feminism began on the internet, and it continues there today, although no longer on Tumblr. Now, one of the most important tools I have for learning about gender issues and feminist fights around the world are newsletters.
Smartass writers and activists provide curated content, essays and news summaries. They allow readers to keep up with what is going on in the world in relation to sexism and learn about the major issues of the day, as well as how to take action. They connect women from around the globe and give us a place to discuss our experiences or find essays that put words on them.
Feminist Giant by Mona Eltahawy
As soon as I read the tagline, I was hooked: “Defy, Disobey, Disrupt.” Feminists are rebels, not gratuitously, but by necessity, and this is something that Mona Eltahawy knows all too well. The freelance Egyptian-American journalist and feminist commentator was arrested in 2011 during to protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, and was interrogated and both physically and sexually assaulted, breaking her left arm and right hand. She went on to write two best selling feminist books: Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution and
The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls. Her newsletter is equally revolutionary. Each week, she shares an essay and they are all ground-shakingly, patriarchy quakingly powerful.
