Porn Actresses Keep Getting Raped

Four French porn actors were last week charged with rape as a string of women come forward about years of abuse on amateur and professional porn film sets. This is the first time that porn actors in France have been charged with rape, although last year, two porn film producers and two others were charged with pimping and modern slavery. A source close to the investigation said around 50 abuse victims had been identified.

Meanwhile, the website “French Bukkake”, a hub for hardcore “amateur” videos has also been denounced by women who say they suffered violence on set. One actress told AFP that she had been forced to have unprotected sex with a man who had lied about testing negative for a sexually transmitted infection, and that on another occasion a director had made her do practices that left her in pain for days.

A #MeToo Moment for the Porn Industry

Some are comparing the current wave of porn actresses coming forward with a #MeToo movement in the industry, and France is not the only country where this is happening.

In August, US porn star Ron Jeremy was formally charged with raping or sexually assaulting 21 women and girls. He used his celebrity to meet and isolate young women, many of whom approached him asking for autographs and selfies, before he led them away and attacked them. Some of the survivors said that Jeremy’s status as a porn actor prevented them from going to the police. “He’s a celebrity and what he’s known for is having sex with people on camera for money … I thought there is no way anyone is going to believe me, and I just wanted to get out of there and forget all about it,” one victim told AP.

Mia Khalifa, once one of the biggest porn stars in the world, came forward in 2019 about the rampant exploitation in the industry, and how porn seems to be out of the reach of criticism. She complained about the pittance she was paid — $12,000 for three months, which is even more shocking considering her time in porn blocked her from working in other professions afterwards. “[Porn] corporations prey on callow young women and trap them legally into contracts when they’re vulnerable,” she said.
