Why People Are So Angry About Seeing Diversity in Netflix Shows

It reveals an ongoing discomfort about the existence of people who aren’t white, cis, straight and wealthy.

I’m rewatching Atypical and loving it just as much as the first time. The main character, Sam, is Autistic and seeing the world through the eyes of someone who is not neurotypical makes a change from the endlessly repetitive shows we are used to seeing. But it is mainly the love sorry between Casey and Izzie that warms my heart. As a queer woman, I can relate so much to their experience as they slowly realize their feelings for each other.

Diversity is good for entertainment

Seeing these stories on screen is great because it widens the scope of what TV shows can portray. It is interesting to see things that have not been shown before. And seeing ones own experience represented sparks joy in a way that is hard to put into words. It gives you a sense of belonging to know that others have similar experiences.

That’s why I am strongly in favour of diversity in TV shows. Not just from a social justice and equality perspective, but also from a sheer entertainment perspective.
